How I Taught My 3 Year Old Thiel To Spell His Name

My son Thiel can easily spell his name. He is now 3 years and 6 months old, but if I'm not mistaken, he learned it at exactly 3 or even a few weeks before. Let me share with you this unconventional method that i used to teach him.

When Thiel was only a little more than 1 year old, I noticed that he could easily memorize the lyrics of a song. Here's how i discovered it:

Ever since he was a baby, to make him sleep, I would always sing him songs like "Tomorrow" (from the broadway musical 'Annie'), "It Might Be You" (from the movie 'Tootsie'), "All My Life" (sung by 'America') and "Sa Ugoy Ng Duyan" (A Filipino Lullaby). I couldn't remember now how it happened, but one time, I must have stopped singing in the middle of the song and I was surprised when he supplied the next word. For example, I was singing "Time, I've been passing time, watching days ___" (stop). He suddenly blurted out, “go by”. I tried it with the other songs, and I was really amazed that he almost knew all the 'ending' lyrics of the other songs as well. Soon, the songs couldn't make him sleep anymore because he was enjoying the challenge of filling in the missing lyrics.

So, I thought, if he could easily memorize this way, maybe it would also apply to memorizing the spelling of his name. His full name is Theo Ariel. So I put a tune to the spelling, together with the name, and the song goes like this:

T-H-E-O, Theo
A-R-I-E-L A-R-I-E-L A-R-I-E-L, Ariel, Ariel, Ariel

... and the same goes for his last name.

Presto! He instantly memorized it. Now, he can spell a LOT of words. Nah, I don't apply that same style to every word he's learning, but since he enjoyed his first lessons in spelling, it wasn't hard to teach him from then on.
